The National Mount Rushmore Memorial is a well-known landmark of America, designed to emphasize the monumentality of the historical contribution of the great political leaders. In the mountain massif of South Dakota, four giant sculptural portraits of US presidents are carved: George Washington, the founder of American democracy, Thomas Jefferson, creator of the Declaration of Independence, Abraham Lincoln, who closed the subject of slavery in the United States and Theodore Roosevelt, which contributed to progress, business and statehood.
Mount Rushmore received its name in 1930, perpetuating the memory of the businessman and organizer of the first expedition to the area - Charles Rushmore. Later, the businessman allocated 5 thousand dollars for making sculptures - for that time it was a colossal donation.
Works on the creation of the bas-relief on Mount Rushmore were made from 1927 to 1941 under the sculptor Gutson Borglum. Of the fourteen years of hard work, many fell during the Great Depression, which made it difficult to find the means to work. As a result, the creation of sculptures cost a relatively small amount of 1 million dollars.
Huge experience and hard work of four hundred masters gave life to a grandiose project. Sculptor Borglum died in 1941, leaving only a few months of work to completion, which was already directed by his son.
Titanic bas-relief is the main part of the Mount Rushmore monument. In addition, the memorial area of 517 hectares includes a complex with an observation deck, a visitor center, the Presidential Track, the Banner of the Banners, a sculptor's museum. Almost three million tourists annually see to see a grandiose creation and pay tribute to the great political leaders of the United States.
