The Perry victory memorial and the international peace is in Ohio. It was opened in March 1919 in the form of a 107-meter granite tower located on one of the islands of Lake Erie. The monument is recognized as the highest Doric column on earth.
The famous American naval commander Oliver Hazard Perry commanded the ship "Nautilus" in the battles of the Berber war, led the fleet in the Anglo-American war. The greatest achievement of the commander is the victory in 1813 over the English flotilla in the battle of Erie. This event is immortalized in a monument called the Perry Memorial of Victory and Peace in the World.
In the column is a rotunda, under which the remains of three British and three American officers are buried, as a symbol of reconciliation between the parties. On the walls of the rotunda are carved the names of the dead and wounded Americans, as well as the names of the ships that participated in the battle. Visitors of the monument can climb by elevator to the observation deck under the open sky and admire the panorama of the lake and the coast.
Lake Erie belongs to the system of North American Great Lakes, on it lies the border between the United States and neighboring Canada. Until now, there are about 8000 ships on its bottom, which attracts divers from all over the world. Among the freshwater lakes of the world, it ranks 10th in size, legends tell of the monster Bessi living in it. Picturesque coasts and islands of Erie attract a lot of tourists, 200 thousand of which come to the monument every year to celebrate the victory of Oliver Perry.
