The National Military History Park of Vicksburg keeps the memory of a major episode of the Civil War in the United States. In the spring of 1863, the federal army, led by the legendary General Grant, made several successful maneuvers and crossed the Mississippi River. This forced the General of the Confederates of Pemberton to withdraw troops to the fortified city of Vicksburg, which was called the "Gibraltar of the Confederation"

Several attempts to storm the city were not successful, so Grant decided to besiege Vicksburg. The 47-day siege forced the army of southerners to capitulate, control over the territories adjacent to the Mississippi passed to the army of the North. This military operation is recognized as one of the most important victories in the Civil War.

The military-historical park on the site of the battles for the besieged Vicksburg was opened in February 1899. Since 1966, it is a Historic Site in the National Register of the United States. The memorial is spread over an area of 7.3 square meters. Km, giving visitors the opportunity to see restored forts and trenches with a length of 32 km, several pre-war houses, 1325 different monuments, 144 cannons, a military cemetery. To illustrate the dislocation and advance of the troops, special markers are placed.

A popular exhibit is the battleship Cairo, sunk by a torpedo during military battles on the Yazoo River and rebuilt in 1964. A part of the unfinished "channel of Grant", which became an unsuccessful attempt to change the Mississippi channel, has been preserved. The park offers museum expositions, themed films in the center of visitors, fascinating excursions. More than a million people who want to touch the history of the country visit the Vicksburg Park every year.
