The Homestead Memorial is a national monument in the state of Nebraska, reminiscent of a large-scale event in the history of America: the relocation of volunteers to the free lands of the West and the Pacific coast.

The Federal Law (Act) on homesteads (homestead) was signed in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln. According to the act, every citizen of the United States could receive no more than 160 acres, provided he was at least 21 years old and did not fight in the Civil War on the side of the South. So it was distributed about 2 million sites, the law was terminated in 1976.

The legend says that the registration of the first homestead was made on 01.01.1863 at 00-10 - ten minutes after the law came into force. The most agile settler was Dan Freeman, it was at his farm site in 1936 was opened national memorial. The main attractions - a log house in 1867, in which once lived a family of 12 people, samples of agricultural machinery. In the estate there are the graves of Freeman and his wife. There is a school building nearby - the children of farmers were not deprived of the opportunity to study. A small museum of the memorial provides materials about the event, which allowed to master 12% of the country's area.

The National Park Service of the United States has restored more than 100 acres of farmstead and adjoining prairie. The corners of the wild are recreated, the ecosystem is carefully maintained. Visitors can take a walk along the developed routes. The memorial visually acquaints with the history of the development of lands, demonstrates the difficulties that the settlers overcame, pays tribute to their courage and purposefulness, and also convinces the rationality of the homestead law, which allowed to significantly expand the country to the west.
