As part of the second phase of the Economic and Monetary Union (January 1, 1994 - December 31, 1998), on January 1, 1994, the European Monetary Institute (EMI) was established. He replaced the European Monetary Fund. The objectives of the Institute were to strengthen cooperation between national central banks, strengthen the coordination of their monetary policy, and carry out preparatory work to create a European system of central banks, implement a single monetary policy and create a single currency. The first president of the European Monetary Institute was Alexander Lamfalussi. He was replaced on July 1, 1997 by Wim Duisenberg, who subsequently continued his work as the first head of the European Central Bank. After increasing economic convergence within the union, a third stage was prepared, including the introduction of the euro. At a meeting of the European Council in Madrid from 15 to 16 December 1995, the heads of state and government of the member states decided that the new currency would be introduced on 1 January 1999. Therefore, the European Monetary Institute was replaced by the European Central Bank (ECB) on June 1, 1998.
