Paphos is a city in the south-western part of the island of Cyprus. The administrative city is the center of the eponymous region (one of the 6 districts of the Republic of Cyprus). 80% of the population speaks Greek, for the remaining 20% of residents, the native language is Turkish.
According to mythology, Paphos is the birthplace of the Greek goddess of love of Aphrodite. The apostle Paul preached in Paphos the word of God. In 51 BC. in the city lived a well-known orator Mark Tullius Cicero, who was the proconsul of Cyprus. Paphos is included in the list of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of UNESCO. Nearby is an international airport.
Together with the Danish city of Aarhus, Paphos was chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2017.
Obverse: In the center of the coin there is an antique amphitheater in Paphos Ancient Odeon, below is the name of the issuing state "ΚΥΠΡΟΣ KIBRIS", at the top half of the inner ring there is the inscription: "Pafos 2017 is the cultural capital of Europe". On the outer ring are the twelve stars of the European Union
Reverse: In the center on the right is a map of Europe with a horizontal inscription "EURO". The map of Europe is depicted on top of six vertical lines symbolizing stability; at the ends of these lines there are stars (12 stars in all - one for each end of the line, symbolizing the 12 founding countries of the eurozone). The sign on the left side is the number symbol of the face value - 2. The sign of the designer Luc Luycx - the two crossing letters L (LL) resembling the figure 4 are located on the right in the center under the letter "O" of the word EURO).
