The main building of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics
The Institute is primarily a scientific center that studies and diagnoses many diseases at the genetic level, as well as chromosomes. CING also offers specialized services - prenatal tests and DNA testing. The institute's laboratories conduct research on urgent orders received from the Diagnostic Center. The laboratory machines of the institute work in a constant mode online: this is the specificity of experiments and research.
In addition, in 2011, the Cyprus School of Molecular Medicine (CSMM) was opened at the institute, which specializes in molecular medicine, medical genetics, neurobiology and biomedical research.
The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics was one of the first and today one of the best examples in Europe to successfully combine postgraduate education, research and services.
The institute began its activities in 1990 on an area of 300 m? at the Hospital of Archbishop Makarios III in Nicosia with basic equipment and personnel numbering about 20 people. This space was provided by the Government of Cyprus, which also donated land for the construction of the new premises.
In 1995, CING moved into its own purpose-built building with an area of about 10 thousand square meters. Due to the need to provide high quality laboratory and clinical services in Cyprus, the Government of Cyprus has funded CING annually in exchange for providing high quality clinical and diagnostic services to public hospitals.
Since 1995, the institute has been providing high-level services and the most competitive and innovative biomedical research aimed at early detection and prevention of diseases. In addition, it provides postgraduate education that is closely related to research activities and services.
Obverse: In the center of the coin, a neuron with its synapses is depicted in connection with the activities of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics. At the top along the edge of the disc is the theme of the coin: "«ΣΤΙTOYΤΟ ΝΕΥΡΟΛΟΓΊΑΣ & ΓΕΝΕΤΙKHΣ KYΠΡΟY 1990-2020" ("CYPRUS INSTITUTE OF NEUROLOGY AND GENETICS 1990-2020"). Below - the name of the issuing country in both official languages (Greek and Turkish) "KΥΠPOΣ KIBRIS".
Reverse: In the center right there is a map of Europe with a horizontal inscription “EURO”. The map of Europe is depicted over six vertical lines symbolizing stability; at the ends of these lines there are stars (a total of 12 stars - one at each end of the line, symbolizing the 12 founding countries of the eurozone). On the left side there is a numeric designation of the denomination - 2. Sign of designer Luc Luycx - two intersecting letters L (LL), reminiscent of the number 4, are located in the center right under the letter "O" of the word EURO).
