Estonia 2 Euro 2019 100 years of teaching in Estonian at the University of Tartu.

University of Tartu (Dorpat (1802-1893), Yurievsky (1893-1918); Estonian Tartu Ülikool (since 1918)) - the oldest institution of higher education in Tartu (Estonia). The University is part of the Association of European Universities Utrecht Network and Coimbra Group. It was founded by the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf in 1632 in the territory of Livonia under the name Academia Gustaviana. He became the second university in Sweden (after Uppsala) - Universitas Gustaviana. The first rector of the Academy, King Gustav II Adolf appointed his teacher and mentor, Governor General of Livonia, Ingria and Karelia Juhan Schütte. In the XVIII century, after the accession of Estonia to Russia, ceased to exist. Emperor Paul I, favored the Ostseen nobility, gave movement to the project of the university for this region. Of the two proposed cities - Mitau and Derpt - the choice was made in favor of the latter: Derpt. During the reign of Emperor Alexander I, the Commission on the Establishment of Schools completed the creation of a university in Derpt, the plan of which was approved by Paul I on May 4 (15) 1799. The grand opening of the Imperial University of Derpt took place on April 21 (May 3), 1802 and April 22 (May 4) ) 1802, and the lectures began on May 1 (13), 1802. On December 12 (24), 1802, Alexander I signed the “Decree Act for the Imperial University in Derpt”, thus the treasury was entrusted with the material support of the university, and the leadership was transferred under the auspices of the Ministry of People’s Education. This day is celebrated annually as the day of the establishment of the university. The charter of the University of Dorpat was approved by Alexander I on September 12 (24), 1803. The educational institution designed by the Ostsee barons for a long time became “special” in the Russian university system. The University of Dorpat was predominantly German in composition of teachers and students, teaching was conducted in German. By the end of the 19th century, among a large part of the population of the Baltic states, especially its educated layer, the Russian language was widespread, the Baltic Germans were actually bilingual. Under these conditions, it became possible to introduce training in Russian at the University of Derpt. In 1892, Russification of the University of Derpt took place, which was renamed the Yuryev University under the ancient Russian name of Derpt - Yuryev. In 1918, due to the threat of German occupation, the university faculty (including Russian Germans) and students were evacuated to Voronezh, where Voronezh State University was formed on its basis. In 1919, after the interventionists left and Estonia became independent, the University of Tartu was reorganized into a national university with instruction in the Estonian language, although Russian-language science continued to develop in it.
