Belgium 2 Euro 2019 year. 450 years since the death of Peter Bruegel the Elder (Belgie)

The coin is minted with a quality uncirculated (BU) diamond and originally comes on a coin card. Printing version, Coincard BU in Dutch and English in front and in French and German on the back:

Obverse: the map of Europe is located on the right side. On the background of the map are six vertical lines. At the ends of these lines there are 12 stars. To the left of the card there is a numerical designation par. On the card itself is a horizontal inscription "EURO".

Reverse: On the inside of the coin there is a portrait of the famous Belgian artist Peter Bruegel the Elder, as well as one of his most famous paintings - the Tower of Babel, located on an easel. In the upper part is the name of P. Bruegel, 1569, with a small obelisk that indicates the year of death, and 2019. Since the Royal Netherlands Mint created the coins, the sign of the Utrecht Mint, a caduceus (heraldic staff), is put to the left of the sign of the mint of the Director of the Belgian Mint, the shield of the municipality of Herzel’s weapon and the country code "BE". On the right are the initials LL, which belong to the initials of currency designer Luke Lux. Finally, small dots appear along the edge of the inside, forming a circle. In the circle of the outer ring are 12 stars of the European Union.

The famous Dutch artist Bruegel Peter (Senior), also known as the “peasant artist” or “peasant”, for his commitment to depicting rural landscapes and genre scenes on the life of ordinary people. He gave the world two more artists of his sons: Peter the Younger "Hellish" and Jan the Elder "Paradise".

The exact time, as well as the exact place of birth of this artist are unknown. The researchers of his work called the period between 1525 and 1530, and the place of birth is considered to be the city of Brad or the village of Bregel, near Brabant.

He was born in a simple peasant family and received his nickname, as it was then, from the name of the village, but his sons received it as a full-fledged surname. How and under what circumstances he came to Antwerp is unknown, but it is reliably known that he studied painting in the studio of Peter Cook van Alst, the famous painter of that time, who used the king’s location and wrote for the royal gallery. In 1551, the first entry appeared, mentioning the entry of Peter Bruegel into the painters guild named after St. Luke. At the same time, he went to work for an engraver and painter Jerome Kok, who printed and distributed engravings.

Virtually all surviving paintings by Bruegel portray representatives of the peasantry. The faces of the peasants are hidden, the artist did not work as a portrait painter, but the genre prices are written down to the smallest details. In addition, in his works, the artist turned to ancient subjects, and to Christian themes.

You can’t just look at Bruegel’s works or admire them, they require a deep understanding and hard work of thought, they, written five centuries ago, are also relevant in our hectic times.
