The historical and geographical region of Thrace is located in the east of the Balkan Peninsula. It is currently divided between three states: Bulgaria (Northern Thrace, also known as the Upper Thrace Lowland), Greece (the modern Greek province of Thrace, also historically known as Western Thrace) and Turkey, which ceded Eastern Thrace along with the region's largest megalopolis, Istanbul.

Western Thrace is located in Greece between the Nestos River in the west, the Evros River in the east. In the north, the region is bordered by the Rhodope Mountains, along which the border with Bulgaria runs. The Aegean island of Samothrace also belongs to Western Thrace. The area of ​​the region is 8577.75 square kilometers, the population is 385 thousand people. (2011).

Since the Middle Ages, Western Thrace was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. During the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913. Thrace became the theater of operations in the armed confrontation between Turkey and Bulgaria and its allies.

After the signing of the Constantinople Peace Treaty of September 16, 1913, the Ottoman Empire secured the whole of Eastern Thrace, Western Thrace went to Bulgaria.

In World War I, Bulgaria joined the alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. After the defeat of the military-political bloc, according to the Treaty of Neuille on November 27, 1919, Western Thrace was declared a mandate territory of the Entente and was occupied by French troops, and in April 1920 the San Remo Conference granted this territory to Greece.

Despite the agreements, the territory of the region continued to be disputed between Greece and Bulgaria. The 1923 Lausanne Peace Treaty dotted the i's. According to him, Thrace was divided between three states: Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.

Obverse: On the inner disc there is a silver coin from Abder with the image of a griffin. The inscription above along the edge of the disc: “100 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΕΝΣΩΜΑΤΩΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΘΡΑΚΗΣ” (“100 YEARS WITH THE INTEGRATION OF THRAKIA”). Below - the name of the issuing state "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ", on the sides of which are the mint mark (acanthus leaf) and the year of issue of the coin "2020". There is also a monogram of the author of the coin design ("ΣΤΑΜ").
Around the outer ring are 12 stars of the European Union.
