The historical and geographical region of Thrace is located in the east of the Balkan Peninsula. Since the Middle Ages, Western Thrace was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. During the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913. Thrace became the theater of operations in the armed confrontation between Turkey and Bulgaria and its allies.

After the signing of the Constantinople Peace Treaty of September 16, 1913, the Ottoman Empire secured the whole of Eastern Thrace, Western Thrace went to Bulgaria.

In World War I, Bulgaria joined the alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. After the defeat of the military-political bloc, according to the Treaty of Neuille on November 27, 1919, Western Thrace was declared a mandate territory of the Entente and was occupied by French troops, and in April 1920 the San Remo Conference granted this territory to Greece.

Despite the agreements, the territory of the region continued to be disputed between Greece and Bulgaria. The 1923 Lausanne Peace Treaty dotted the i's. According to him, Thrace was divided between three states: Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.
