Companions of this sailing ship have long gone to needles and are forgotten, and the frigate "Sørlandet" is still considered the oldest of the three Norwegian sailing ships and is one of the ten oldest sailing vessels in the world that are in operation.

The frigate "Sørlandet", named after the southernmost point of Norway, was built in 1927 at the shipyard "Hølvolds Mek. In the same year, after the traditional baptism of the ship by the very King of Norway Haakon VII and his successor Prince Olaf, the frigate traveled to his first flight to Oslo. Then, taking on board 90 young cadets, the sailing ship headed for London. Initially, the sailboat had neither an additional engine nor a propeller and was driven solely by sailing weapons.

With the onset of World War II, the frigate became a haven for German submariners. During this period, the sailing ship suffered several injuries. Repaired and ready to go sailboat again, appeared in 1948. Ten years later, the frigate underwent a minor upgrade, during which the sailing vessel was additionally equipped with a ship engine and a propeller.

In 1974, the frigate from the training ship turned into a private yacht, but standing at the quay of the city of Kilsund for three years, the frigate returned to his native Kristiansand. And that no one else had a desire to acquire this unique heritage of the times of high sailing ships, the "Fullriggeren Sørlandets Venner" Association (Friends of the sailing ship "Sørlandet") was created, which currently is both the owner and ship operator of the sailboat.
