Belozersk - one of the oldest Russian cities. It was first mentioned in the Primary Chronicle under the year 862: "... Prince gave away her husband Polotesk grads ... ... ... Beloozero Rostov." From IX to XVIII centuries. the city was called the lake - just Beloozero. In the IX century it was located on the northern shore of the lake, near the modern village of Trinity, who was called up to the XVI century Kisnemoy, Kisnemskim churchyard. In the X century the city was moved to the southern shore of White Lake, to the place where the lake flows the river Sheksna. By assumption, scholars, city transfer was due to the natural increase of the lake water level.

Since 1777 Beloozero officially renamed in Belozersk. At the beginning of the XIX century the development of the city contributed to the Mariinsky water system, which became operational in 1810, and the last of its facilities - Belozersky bypass canal - opened in 1846
