Thomas Jefferson took the functions of the head of the American state in 1801 and became the third president of the United States. He was born in 1743 in colonial Virginia, where after 26 years began to work in the post member of the House of Representatives. Jefferson was a highly educated man: he was a specialist in philosophy, economics, law, considered a good agronomist and the architect, knew languages, played the violin. He published articles that brought him fame policies of democratic views. In particular, he advocated the abolition of slavery, and in 1778 managed to pass a law banning the slave trade in the territory of Virginia. On the basis of its collection of books the Library of Congress was established.

Thomas Jefferson for three years was governor of Virginia, five years after the French, then the Secretary of State by President George Washington. Twice nominated by the Democratic Party to the Republican candidate in the presidential elections and was elected in 1800. During the two terms of the Board held a democratization of power, increased the share of agricultural production in the economy, had a reasonable reduction of staff in the army. In 1808 it was approved a ban on the slave trade.

The fundamental achievement of the time of his presidency was the purchase in 1803 of Louisiana from France. There was also a resonance expedition across the US territory, led by Lewis and Clark, whose strategy was developed with the active participation of the president.

Thomas Jefferson died in the summer of 1826. His monument is placed in Monticello written his own epitaph.
