Chester A. Arthur - Republican politician, from 1881 to 1885 the 21 th president of the United States. He took the leadership of the country after the assassination of James Garfield.
He was born in 1829. He participated in the formation of the Republican Party. In the Civil War he worked in the weapons system forces. 5 years he held a lucrative post of customs director of the New York harbor, resulting in acquired wealth and political influence. He was removed from his post by President Hayes on the pretext of bribery cases.
In 1880, the opposition, led by Hayes, James Garfield was able to win the election, and Arthur was appointed Vice-President. A few months later Garfield was mortally wounded, and the presidency is automatically moved to Arthur.
In a short time the new president changed the composition of the Cabinet, without taking into account party affiliation. During the term short work vigorously with the laws, hinder the development of the country, attracted to justice several big party members involved in receiving illegal income, he had a thorough reform of the civil service. Familiar with the intricacies of corruption schemes, President Chester A. Arthur successfully destroyed them in the civil service bodies. Being absolutely unpopular at the beginning of the presidential term, four years later, he bought a lot of confessions, and extremely dissatisfied compatriots.
Full, yet elegant Chester Arthur was the darling of the Washington elite. He had time to update and luxuriously furnish the room of the White House, giving it the status of a fitting.
