The coin is 10 rubles, Vladikavkaz in a series of City of Military Glory (WAN) released on 1 July 2011.

In the summer of 1942, German troops launched an offensive. 4 Panzer Army broke through the front between Kharkov and Kursk and moved to the Don. 23 July 1942 fell Rostov-on-Don and the way the Caucasus was opened - the fascists an opportunity to take the Caucasus (Baku oil), Stalingrad (a major transport and industrial hub) and Kuban (grain). Hitler chose this area as a major.

After the fall of Rostov message Caucasus with the European part of the USSR it was possible only the Volga and the railway Salsk - Stalingrad. After cutting the communication could take the Caucasus, and to deprive the Soviet Union of important resources. At first the attack on Stalingrad was considered secondary, which led to the strategic miscalculations and failures like Stalingrad and the Caucasus offensive.

The reverse of the coin depicts the coat of arms of the city of Vladikavkaz - by heraldic shield mountains, locked gates of the fortress and the key. The coat of arms was approved in 1873. During the Great Patriotic War, defenders of the city did not pass his enemy fortress, and open the way to the Caucasus. In 2007 the city was awarded the title of City of Military Glory.

The honorary title of City of Military Glory (WAN) is assigned to the Decree of President of the Russian Federation "For courage, steadfastness and mass heroism the defenders of the city, in the struggle for freedom and independence of the Motherland."
