The coin is 10 rubles, Rzhev in a series of City of Military Glory (WAN) released on September 1, 2011.
Battles of Rzhev includes several operations, which lasted 15 months with interruptions from 8 January 1942 to 31 March 1943, one of the bloodiest episodes of the Great Patriotic War, more than half of our soldiers dead and more than 700 thousand injured. Rzhevskaya arc was the valley of death. City of Rzhev was almost all destroyed, 56 thousand pre-war population of Rzhev in the city survived a total of 150 people. Poet Alexander Tvardovsky, who visited the site of the battle and what he saw shocked wrote a poem, "I killed underneath Rzhev"
October 8, 2007 the city of Rzhev was awarded the honorary title of "City of Military Glory." The reverse of the coin depicts the coat of arms of the city of Rzhev - gold, rebels, armed with lion escutcheon surrounded by a ribbon of the Order of the Patriotic War I level. The coat of arms was adopted August 15, 1996.
The honorary title of City of Military Glory (WAN) is assigned to the Decree of President of the Russian Federation "For courage, steadfastness and mass heroism the defenders of the city, in the struggle for freedom and independence of the Motherland."
