Slovakia. 2 euros. 2016 The first presidency of Slovakia in the Council of Europe.
The presidency of the European Union is carried out alternately for six months by each of the EU member states. During the presidency, the presiding country is the "face and voice" of the European Union, expressing the position on behalf of all member states of the European Union. The order of the EU presidency was approved until 2020.
Each council is chaired by a representative of the state currently presiding over the Council of the EU.
Functions of the EU Presidency:
• managing the work of the Council of the European Union;
• maintaining relations with other EU institutions;
• representation of the European Union at the international level.
For a long time, the 6-month rotation system has been criticized, in particular, because of its short duration.
When the Council was created in 1952, its work was minimal, and there were only six states that were members of the union. However, as the Council's workload increased and the number of states increased, the lack of coordination between each successive six-month presidency began to hinder the development of long-term priorities for the EU.
To remedy the lack of coordination, the idea of a triple presidency was put forward, in which groups of three successive presidencies collaborated on a common political agenda. This was implemented in 2007 and formalized in 2009 with the Treaty of Lisbon.
In the second half of 2016, Slovakia chaired the Council of the EU. The program of this presidency is based on four priorities: an economically strong Europe, a modern single market, a sustainable migration and shelter policy, and a united Europe on the world stage.
Obverse: the coat of arms of the country is depicted on the inner disc, in the background - dynamic lines that symbolize the leading role and importance of the Slovak Republic during its presidency of the Council of the European Union. To the right of the coat of arms is the year of issue of the coin "2016". At the bottom are the mark of the Mint of Slovakia and the initials of the artist "VP". Text along edge of disc: "SLOVENSKO • PREDSEDNICTVO SR V RADE EU •" "SLOVAKIA • SLOVAK REPUBLIC'S PRESIDENCE OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EU".
The 12 stars of the European Union are located around the outer ring.
Reverse: the map of Europe is located on the right side. There are six vertical lines on the background of the map. At the ends of these lines there are 12 stars. To the left of the card there is a numerical designation of the face value. On the card itself there is a horizontal inscription "EURO".
