On the wooded slope of Mount Naranko, three kilometers from the modern center of Oviedo, towers the largest of the surviving ancient Asturian churches, a unique masterpiece of Doroman architecture. The building of the church was built in 842 as the main residence of King Ramiro I. Together with the neighboring chapel of Michael de Lillo, it was a single palace complex. In the XII century because of the corrosion of soils, the architectural complex was partially destroyed, and the surviving buildings were turned into temples. In 1985, they were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The interior of the church is decorated with beautiful stone carvings - medallions with images of animals, birds and knights in armor and arcade with "braided" columns. From the site at the main entrance a beautiful panorama of the city opens, especially spectacular in the hours of sunset.
