Maya Angelou is an American writer and poet. She wrote seven autobiographies, five books of essays, and several collections of poetry. Her name is listed among the authors of a number of plays, films and television shows that have been published for over fifty years. The book I Know Why the Bird Sings in a Cage, a chronicle of her life until the age of 16, brought her worldwide fame. Angelou's books focus on racism, personality, family and travel.
Angelou has received over 30 honorary degrees and has been inducted into the Wake Forest University Writers Hall of Fame. She was active in the civil rights movement. She had a chance to work with Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. In 1993, at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton, she read her poem "On the Pulse of the Morning." In 2010, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Maya Angelou was also the recipient of the 2013 National Literary Award for her contribution to the literary community.

Obverse: Center right depicts a portrait of President George Washington right (portrait originally drawn and sculpted by Laura Hardin Fraser. This was the recommended design for the 1932 Washington Bicentennial Quarter, but then-Treasury Secretary Mellon ultimately chose John Flanagan's design, facing left). At the top, the word LIBERTY (LIBERTY) is minted in a semicircle, on the right in several lines - IN GOD / WE / TRUST (WE BELIEVE IN GOD) and the letter of the mint.

Reverse: Maya Angelou is depicted in the center with raised hands. Behind her is a flying bird and a rising sun, images inspired by her poetry and symbolizing her way of life. The silhouette of the bird depicts the Purple Martin, a songbird common to Angelou's birthplace. At the top, the name of the issuing country is minted in a semicircle: "UNATED STATES OF AMERICA". Left center in two lines is the name of the poetess: "MAYA / ANGELOU"; US motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is placed in two lines on the right center. Below are the initials of the designer and sculptor of the reverse.
