Kalmykia - republic within the Russian Federation, located in the southeast of the European part of Russia. The territory of Kalmykia in ancient times was inhabited by representatives of numerous tribes and peoples. They succeeded each other Cimmerians, Scythians, Sarmatians, Huns, Pechenegs, Cumans, Khazars. In the XIII century this area was ruled by the Golden Horde, and after the collapse of the territory of Kalmykia roamed Nogai tribes.

From the middle of XVII century the territory of modern Republic of Kalmykia and Kalmyks began to populate the Western Mongols (Oirat). They founded the Kalmyk Khanate. Khanate reached its greatest prosperity in the years 1669-1724, during the reign of Ayuka Khan, who firmly defended the southern borders of Russia, made marches against the Crimean Tatars and Kuban.

In the war of 1812 the Kalmyk steppe fielded three horse regiments that participated in the battles with the French.

Kalmykia modern state dates back to 1920, when it was proclaimed the Kalmyk Autonomous Region.

The reverse of the coin depicts the coat of arms of Kalmykia, approved in 1993. The emblem depicts "Ulan Hall" - an ancient decoration for hats Kalmyks, a distinctive sign of belonging to the Kalmyk ethnicity. The top of the ring at the edge of the rim - "Russian Federation" at the bottom - "Republic of Kalmykia." The inscriptions are separated by two points.
