10 Veliky Novgorod rubles 2009 MMD

Veliky Novgorod - one of the oldest Russian cities. As Kiev is called the mother of Russian cities, so Novgorod called the Father of Russian cities. In 2009, it was noted the 1150th anniversary of Novgorod the Great, but the city is actually much more ancient. According to the "Tale of Bygone Years" city already existed at the time of calling Rurik. Novgorod I Chronicle younger recension mentions of Novgorod in ancient times, the legendary Kyi. By the beginning of the XII century Novgorod Land included the southern coast of Lake Ladoga, Onega coast, the Northern Dvina, the northern land to the Urals.

In Novgorod preserved many monuments of ancient architecture, included in UNESCO World Heritage. The oldest of them - Sophia Cathedral, whose construction began in 1045. On the cross of the central dome of the cathedral is the lead figure of a dove - the symbol of the Holy Spirit. According to legend, the dove sent to comfort the city and while it will not fly down from the cross, the city will keep them. St. Sophia Cathedral is located inside the citadel (Novgorod Kremlin) - the ancient center of the city. Contemporary wall citadel erected in the XV century. According to archaeological sites it found that in those ancient times, the city has worked wooden aqueduct. At the beginning of the XII century Novgorod land included the coast of Lake Ladoga, Onega, the banks of the Northern Dvina, the vast expanses of the European North to the Urals.

The prototype served as a seal coat of arms of the Novgorod governor in 1565 - 2 support bear golden chair, crowned with golden candlestick on a chair scepter and cross.
