Vyborg 10 rubles 2009 SPMD
Vyborg - an ancient city, located 70 kilometers north-west of St. Petersburg, on the shores of the Gulf of Vyborg. According to one version, the Swedes founded in 1293 as the Vyborg Castle (Holy Fortress, translated from the Norman). On the other hand, much earlier in this place there was a settlement of the people Korela, which together with Novgorod led trade with the Hanseatic and Dutch merchants. Settlement is, according to tradition was called "Old Vyborg" was Karelian redoubt - a haven where goods were stored and where it was possible to control the trade route from the Gulf of Finland through Vuoksa Ladoga. Protection of the walls of the redoubt enjoy not only the Karelians, but Novgorod merchants. The Swedes have a fight and destroyed the redoubt, putting in its place a stone fortress.
Novgorod Republic was not willing to accept the loss, and in 1294 Novgorod squad tried to take the fortress, but failed. The same thing happened in 1322. Then, Orekhovskaya peace treaty between Novgorod and Sweden border between them took place on the river sister and Vyborg went to Sweden. Only in 1710 the city was captured by Russian troops and navy and Treaty of Nystad in 1721 moved to the Russian Empire.
After the 1917 revolution Vyborg remained on the breakaway territory of Finland, but the results of the Soviet-Finnish war he returned to the Soviet Union.
The reverse of the coin depicts the ancient fortress of Vyborg and the emblem of the city of Vyborg, approved in 2006, based on the ancient coat of arms in 1788. The top of the ring at the edge of the rim - the inscription: "THE ANCIENT CITY OF RUSSIA", at the bottom - "Vyborg".
