City Staraya Russa originated in ancient times. There is an ancient tradition that he was the founder of the Rus prince, brother of Prince words, a descendant of the prince of the Scythians. And until 1552, the year the city was called Ruz.

At the turn of 12-13 centuries in the city built defensive fortifications.

Restoration of the city began in the time of Peter I.
Today Staraya Russa is the administrative center in the Novgorod region, place of concentration of historical and architectural monuments. The city was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War I level.
