City Staraya Russa originated in ancient times. There is an ancient tradition that he was the founder of the Rus prince, brother of Prince words, a descendant of the prince of the Scythians. And until 1552, the year the city was called Ruz.

The exact date of the formation of a settlement at the confluence of Porus and Polist still debate. Historical written sources mention the town in 1167, the year, but there is evidence that in the middle of the 11th century there was a village in the southern Priilmenye.

In the 11-12 th centuries it was already a developed city, which had a distinctive culture. There were lined wooden bridge, the population engaged in crafts, salt production and trade.

In 1192, the year the abbot Martyrius, the future Archbishop of Novgorod, is based Transfiguration Monastery. Two years later, the city burnt a large fire, and another six - built the first stone building - the Transfiguration Cathedral. At the turn of 12-13 centuries in the city built defensive fortifications.

At the end of the 15th century Rus became part of the Moscow principality. Ivan the Terrible during his reign introduced Staraya Russa in the list of oprichnina lands, which saved her from terror and plunder.

In the 16th century the city came in the days of decline. In 1581, the year he was captured and almost completely burned Lithuanian-Polish forces. Restoration of the city began in the time of Peter I.
Today Staraya Russa is the administrative center in the Novgorod region, place of concentration of historical and architectural monuments. The city was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War I level.
