Derbent - Dagestani town, which is perhaps the oldest settlements in the Russian Federation. The first people appeared here in the Bronze Age - it is about 4000 years BC. And already in the 6th century BC. e. a city called the Caspian Gates - the ancient name of Derbent (Persian "closed gate") - for the first time mentions the ancient Greek geographer Hecataeus.

The city is situated on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, where it empties into the river Suhodol. At this point, the Caucasian mountains left for people to pass through a narrow three-kilometer coast, the closest approaches to the sea. On this strip of land between the mountains and the sea in the year 438 BC. e. Persians built a fortress. From her departed two stone walls, completely covers the narrow passage from south to north.

The strategic importance of the citadel for possession of Caspian passage was so great that it is constantly attacked by the Sarmatians, Scythians, Khazars, Huns and others. Derbent initially acted as a link for the Eastern and Western civilizations. Through Derbent pass and ran the Great Silk Road.

In the 7th century Derbent was captured by the Arabs, from that time began a period of Islamization of the population. At that time, it built the first mosque. Along with trade actively developed crafts (jewelry, carpet weaving and weaving, pottery and stekloduvstvo, paper and silk) and agriculture (horticulture, cultivation of cotton, flax, saffron, etc.).

In 1668, the year the city first came under the power of Russian Cossack Stepan Razin. Since then, the Russian tried to retain power over the Caspian passage. For some time the city passed from the Russian to the Arabs, and vice versa. In 1813, the year he finally joined the Russian state.
