Torzhok - ancient trading city founded by Novgorod merchants in the end of IX early tenth centuries. By the XIII century the town was surrounded by a stone wall, ramparts and deep moats. In 1238, the year the city came near horde of Mongol-Tatars. Two weeks Torzhok was under siege, its people courageously defended. The city fell, but the heroism of the Russian soldiers stopped the further invasion of Mongols Novgorod principality. During frequent feuds Torzhok often destroyed, but again rebuilt and restored. And in 1478, the year with the Novgorod he entered the Moscow principality.

Today Torzhok - a historic city, a tourist center on the route "Pushkin Ring Upper". It has preserved many historical monuments, temples and churches of XVII-XIX centuries.
