On the steep bank of the river Hupta 117 kilometers south of the ancient city of Ryazan is Ryazhsk. The first mention in the annals takes us to 1502. Then dragged on Ryasskomu field Hupty dragged from the river to the river becomes the cassock, small merchant ships transporting bread and honey, furs and wax, thus connecting the Oka and Don.

The settlement had the status of a fortress to defend the south Russian land from the Nogai and Crimean Tatars. From the town on the steppe sent troops to carry Cossacks guard service. Initially, the foundation of the population were service people, who, in addition to military service, doing crafts and traded. Eventually there were settlements around the fortress and planted to serve the visiting folk. Houses there were better and richer, and settled in their officials, nobles and boyars.

Ryazhsk participated in peasant uprisings Bolotnikov and Razin. In 1724, near the town discovered a large deposit of coal. Polk Ryazhskaya participated in major military campaigns of XVIII-XIX centuries, fought in the war with Bonaparte.

A new round of construction gave the mid-19th century railway. Ryazhsk become a significant hub at the intersection of the Syzran-Vyazma and Ryazan-Ural branch of the railway.
