The coin is 10 rubles, Tikhvin in a series of City of Military Glory (WAN) released on August 29, 2014.
Tikhvin - the old, quiet town in the Leningrad region, was first mentioned in chronicles in 1383. Tikhvin rose at the crossroads of trade routes that connected the Volga and Ladoga to the Baltic Sea. Tikhvinskye blacksmiths were widely known both in Russia and abroad. Residents of Tikhvin were famous for their courage and resilience. In the Time of Troubles, the town was burned by the Poles and Swedes, but the inhabitants took refuge behind the walls of the monastery survived the siege of the enemy, and not only did not give up, but also defeated the Swedish army, beginning the liberation of Novgorod lands from invaders.
During the Great Patriotic War in the city of heavy fighting, many architectural monuments, businesses and homes were destroyed. In November 1941 our troops were forced to retreat, and the Tikhvin was occupied by the Nazis. But the occupation did not last long. Tikhvin was released in December 1941. It was held Tikhvin offensive and Tikhvin became the first city that was liberated during the winter counteroffensive of our army. For courage of defenders of the city, they had shown resistance Tikhvin in November 2010 was awarded the honorary title of "City of Military Glory." In honor of this event it was opened stele on the square named after Marshal Meretskov.
The reverse of the coin depicts the coat of arms of the city of Tikhvin - a golden glow, symbolizing that the city became famous for a very long time, and a golden crown, as a sign of special favor to the city of the Russian emperors.
The honorary title of City of Military Glory (WAN) is assigned to the Decree of President of the Russian Federation "For courage, steadfastness and mass heroism the defenders of the city, in the struggle for freedom and independence of the Motherland."
