Series "5 chervontsev.Rednaya kniga SSSR.MMD"

Crimson beetle (Latin Carabus tauricus) is a beetle from a family of ground beetles. It is an endemic species of the Crimea, previously considered a Crimean subspecies of Carabus scabrosus.

The largest predatory beetle of Crimea is the Crimean beetle (Procerus tauricus Bon.), Whose body length can reach 52 mm (a copy in the collection of SA Mosyakin). It is listed in the "Red Book" of Ukraine.

This popular ground beetle is not endemic, as many believe, but only a Crimean subspecies. The Crimean ground beetle inhabits the whole mountainous zone with the foothills and the Southern shore and forms several forms, differing mainly in coloring - casting shades of blue and green colors.

It is a predator that destroys many harmful insects. During the years of mass reproduction of the oak silkworm one can meet almost at every step the beetle-beauty. She has a bronze-colored abdomen with a greenish-blue tint. Beetles regularly eat furry and inconvenient silkworm caterpillars for birds.

Beetle in danger, and especially if you take it in hand, from the end of the abdomen erupts a corrosive liquid, which, getting into the eyes, can cause resists and rapidly passing conjunctivitis.

The number of the Crimean ground beetle in recent years has sharply declined: it is sensitive to pesticides and dies from insecticides used to control other insects.
