And the Great Patriotic War was no exception. Thirty-three days in July and August 1941, continued the heroic defense of the city on the Lovat. During the occupation, the town had underground organizations, and in areas - guerrilla groups, a variety of known and unknown heroes gave their lives for the freedom of the motherland. Germans were burned 348 villages.

January 17, 1943 the city was liberated. For the first time Hitler's troops were almost at the same time, two "pocket" - at Stalingrad and at Great Luki. Surrounded by formations and units were destroyed or surrendered, and at Stalingrad and in Pskov. Street fighting for the liberation of the Great Bow was so fierce that the city nicknamed "little Stalingrad". The city was just wiped out. More than twenty countrymen became Heroes of the Soviet Union.
