Stepan Makarov - a great Russian naval commander, was born in 1848. The family had a lot of military Makarov, both grandfathers, father. Who is Stephen, was a foregone conclusion.

Sea school youth graduated with the rank of midshipman. In 1867, having already had some experience of voyages over the seas, Makarov was appointed to the crew of the Baltic Fleet. During the service, he began to write scientific papers. In 1869 he received the rank of midshipman.

From 1872 Makarov began to actively engage in the construction of ships, and even participate in the development of the steam fleet. Soon came the Russian-Japanese war. Long before its beginning, Makarov suggested to seriously strengthen the defensive orders of Port Arthur. His proposal was inactive. By the beginning of the fighting, he was appointed commander of the Pacific Fleet of the Russian Empire. Soon the Admiral arrived in Port Arthur and began to work actively to strengthen the fortifications. May 31, 1904 Makarova was not, at one of the battleships Admiral went to sea, and blown up by a Japanese mine. The ship sank quickly.
