Gilbert Islands 1 dollar 2019 “Chinese John” - Jonka, a traditional Chinese sailing ship for sailing on rivers and near the sea coast.
Jonka is a traditional Chinese sailing vessel for sailing on rivers and near the coast. It is still widely used in the waters of Southeast Asia. The word comes from the Malay djong, which in turn is a distortion of the South Minh word 船, chûn, meaning "ship".
Johnka's distinctive features are sails made of bamboo rails and quadrangle mats, as well as raised bow and stern. Sails can be folded like blinds. A massive steering wheel replaces the keel. The number of masts reaches five.
The exact time of the invention of the junks is unknown; during the Han Dynasty, they were already widespread. In the early Middle Ages, junks were used for military purposes, even then swimming in the waters of Indonesia and even India.
