Shahin, or red-headed peregrine falcon, desert falcon (lat. Falco pelegrinoides) - a species of birds of prey of the genus falcons.
In appearance and behavior similar to a peregrine falcon, but slightly smaller, the top is lighter, the bottom is buffy with less
developed pattern, on the top and back of the head there are bright red spots. Body length 33 - 39 cm. Females are larger than males. The wing length of males is 274-302, females 315-332 mm. The wingspan is 76 - 98 cm. The back in adults is pale smoky-gray with more or less noticeable reddish rims of mantle feathers, the bottom is reddish with a relatively weak development of mottles. Young from above with a more or less reddish head, with wide red borders of feathers, from below are buffy-reddish with wide brown nastvolami irregular brown transverse pattern of the sides.
Distributed in deserts and dry foothills (up to 1500 m) of North Africa, the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India (Kashmir), Central Asia, in the mountains and foothills of the south and southeast of Kazakhstan from Talas Alatau to Tarbagatai or even Southern Altai. Perhaps it inhabits the uplifts in Kyzylkum, the western steep coast of the Aral Sea and the Ustyurt Chinki. On migration and wintering occurs more widely, gravitating to river valleys and human settlements in the foothill zone.
Nests on the rocks, leads a sedentary lifestyle. The diet is dominated by birds: larks, heaters, grouse, desert partridges, etc. Ecology, nesting biology, behavioral features - like a peregrine Falcon.
